A Sua Eccellenza Mons. Gilbert Aubry

». Chi?

ad una persona ogni anno il 18 marzo, ma avra' anche le “apparizioni” ogni 2 del mese, con i “messaggi” che puoi anche tu aspettare, secondo la procedura abituale;
ad un'altra avverra' ogni giorno dell'anno, ma - come se questo non fosse sufficiente - e percio' di aggiunta ogni 25 del mese una “apparizione” particolare ed anche una specie di comunicato al pubblico che anche tu puoi prevedere e aspettare;
ad una terza apparira' ogni 25 di dicembre, per il Natale, anche con il comunicato simile ai gia' menzionati;
ad una quarta persona “apparira'” ogni anno il 25 giugno, e cio' con un certo comunicato;
Amen.

Scuse e indagini su Medjugorje

A FRENCH BISHOP AND VATICAN CONGREGATION ON MEDJUGORJE

The Bishop of Langres in France, Msgr. Leon Taverdet, took recourse to the ApostolicSee February 14, 1996 to ask what the position of the Church is regarding the apparitionsin Medjugorje and whether it is permitted to go there for pilgrimage. The Holy See'sSacred Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith answered March 23, 1996 through itsSecretary Archbishop Tarcisio Bertone. We present his response in its entirety.

SACRED CONGREGATION FOR THE DOCTRINE OF THE FAITH

Vatican City, March 23, 1996,Prot. No. 154/81-01985,
Your Excellency,

In your letter of February 14, 1996 you inquired what is the present position of theChurch regarding the alleged "apparitions in Medjugorje' and whether it is permittedto the Catholic faith to go there for pilgrimage.

In reference to that it is my honor to make known to you that, regarding theauthenticity of the apparitions in question, the Bishops of the former Yugoslaviaconfirmed in their Declaration of April 10, 1991 published in Zadar:

". . .On the basis of investigation up till now it cannot be established that oneis dealing with supernatural apparitions and revelations. However, the numerous gatheringsof the faithful from different parts of the world, who are coming to Medjugorje promptedboth by motives of belief and certain other motives, require the attention and pastoralcare in the first place of the bishop of the diocese and of the other bishops with him sothat in Medjugorje and everything related to it a healthy devotion toward the BlessedVirgin Mary would be promoted in conformity with the teaching of the Church.

For that purpose the bishops shall issue separate appropriate liturgical-pastoraldirectives. Likewise by means of their Commission they shall further follow andinvestigate the total event in Medjugorje."

The result from this in what is precisely said is that official pilgrimages toMedjugorje, understood as a place of authentic Marian apparitions, are not permitted to beorganized either on the parish or on the diocesan level, because that would be incontradiction to what the Bishops of former Yugoslavia affirmed in their fore mentionedDeclaration.

Kindly accept, your Excellency, an expression of my profoundly devoted affection!

+ Tarcisio Bertone

ON MEDJUGORJE AT THE 6TH REGULAR SESSION OF THE BOSNIA-HERCEGOVINA BISHOPS' CONFERENCE

In Sarajevo on July 2-3, 1996 the sixth regular session of the Bishops' Conference ofBosnia-Hercegovina (BCB-H) was held. Present were all of its members: Cardinal VinkoPuljic, President; Bishop of Banja Luka, Franjo Komarica; Bishop of Mostar, Ratko Peric;and Sarajevo auxiliary Bishop, Pero Sudar. From that session we present here only the textthat refers to Our Lady's apparitions in the parish of Medjugorje.

"The Bishop of Mostar reported to the Conference on the official letters of theSacred Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith addressed to two French bishops inregard to pilgrimages to Medjugorje. In the letters, among other things, is stated that'official pilgrimages to Medjugorje, understood as a place of authentic Marianapparitions, are not permitted to be organized either on the parish or on the diocesanlevel, because that would be in contradiction to what the Bishops of former Yugoslaviaaffirmed in their Declaration of April 10, 1991. (see Glas Koncila, 30, VI, 1996). Thebishops moved to announce and circulate this church position in the territory of theirdioceses."

To His Excellency
Mons. Gilbert Aubry
Bishop of Saint-Denis de la Reunion

Excellency:

In your letter of January 1, 1998, you submitted to this Dicastery several questionsabout the position of the Holy See and of the Bishop of Mostar in regard to the so calledapparitions of Medjugorje, private pilgrimages and the pastoral care of the faithful whogo there.

In regard to this matter, I think it is impossible to reply to each of the questionsposed by Your Excellency. The main thing I would like to point out is that the Holy Seedoes not ordinarily take a position of its own regarding supposed supernatural phenomenaas a court of first instance. As for the credibility of the "apparitions" inquestion, this Dicastery respects what was decided by the bishops of the former Yugoslaviain the Declaration of Zadar, April 10, 1991: "On the basis of the investigationsso far, it can not be affirmed that one is dealing with supernatural apparitions andrevelations." Since the division of Yugoslavia into different independent nationsit would now pertain to the members of the Episcopal Conference of Bosnia-Hercegovina toeventually reopen the examination of this case, and to make any new pronouncements thatmight be called for.

What Bishop Peric said in his letter to the Secretary General of "FamilleChretienne", declaring: "My conviction and my position is not only 'non constatde supernaturalitate,' but likewise, 'constat de non supernaturalitate' of the apparitionsor revelations in Medjugorje", should be considered the expression of the personalconviction of the Bishop of Mostar which he has the right to express as Ordinary of theplace, but which is and remains his personal opinion.

Finally, as regards pilgrimages to Medjugorje, which are conducted privately, thisCongregation points out that they are permitted on condition that they are not regarded asan authentification of events still taking place and which still call for an examinationby the Church.

I hope that I have replied satisfactorily at least to the principal questions that youhave presented to this Dicastery and I beg Your Excellency to accept the expression of mydevoted sentiments.

X ORDINARY GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE SYNOD OF BISHOPS 30 September-27 October 2001

H. Em. Card. Vinko PULJIĆ, Archbishop of Vrhbosna, President of the Episcopal Conference (Bosnia-Herzegovina)

Today’s man feels the urgent need for hope. The tragic events of the century we left behind underline this, like the various threats such as intolerance and indifference, rising over the horizon of this newly begun century. The problems that harass today’s humanity are many and not easily resolved. The Church’s concrete answer to these problems is the courageous and persevering proclamation of the Gospel of Christ and His message of forgiveness, of reconciliation and of peace; His message of peace for each individual and for all the Peoples.
The privileged witness of this message is the Bishop, a man who in virtue of being the authentic successor of the Apostles has placed himself at the service of the Gospel; a man who has become the teacher and the shepherd of the brothers, available for constant and trusting dialogue, joyful in his own vocation.
As pertains to the Church in Bosnia-Herzegovina, its Shepherds commit themselves, together with their priests, consecrated persons and faithful laity, to make their witness become the leaven of society and to make it possible to transmit the light of the Gospel into the economic, social and political realities of their Nation. While most of the consecrated persons operating on the territory of the local ecclesial districts remain faithful to the charism of their Institutes and commit themselves without reservation to the promotion of apostolic works, for the good of the Church and civic society; unfortunately, certain members of the Order of Franciscan Friars Minor and those expelled try to impose their own points of view in the individual Dioceses, substituting the authentic charisms of their Institute with pseudo-charisms, a serious threat for the Church and for her organizational and doctrinal unity. Suffice it to recall the sad events last summer when the protagonists of the aforementioned Order and a self-declared bishop: an old-style Catholic deacon expelled from his community, or a systematic disobedience to the same religious persons who for years have been in the Diocese of Mostar-Duvno.

Today, we can painfully see that the world is divided. This division concerns various sectors and has various origins. Unfortunately, there are also divisions in the Church, the Mystical Body of Christ and the universal sacrament of salvation. There is a growing consciousness that division veils the gaze toward the future.
Overcoming the divisions existing in the Church and in today’s world offers a special charge of hope to today’s humanity. The Church must not remain divided and is called to being one, holy, Catholic and apostolic; she is called to be communion and remaining united on the local as well as the universal level, always with the Successor of Peter at her head. Thanks to the Gospel, the Church presents herself to the world as a vital force capable of making it more united. In light of this, ecumenical dialogue re-acquires a new impetus. The same can be said about interreligious dialogue.
Europe can no longer be divided into Eastern and Western Europe. The world cannot remain divided between North and South, between rich and developed nations and poor and underdeveloped nations. The Nations cannot continue to be divided into civil Nations and Nations considered uncivil.
The answer to the divisions in today’s world is the sincere dialogue between Nations and Peoples. No matter what the theme or the reason for dialogue, both sides are always involved. There can be no dialogue if one of the parts is not an active participant.
A great contribution to the commitment for overcoming the existing divisions could be given particularly through the means of social communication, which are capable of also being the privileged means for the proclamation of the Gospel. Those who work with these means and those who direct them have a great responsibility.

Bishop's Sermon about Our Lady and Medjugorje "apparitions"
THE IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY
Medjugorje, July 1, 2000

Dear candidates for Confirmation and God-loving faithful:
Yesterday we celebrated the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in various places in our two Dioceses. Today the Church celebrates the liturgical memory of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. This celebration used to fall on the 22nd of August (I recall with gratitude to God, that I chose to celebrate my First Mass on that day in 1969). For many years now this memory is celebrated the day after the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart, one after the other, and rightfully so. Today’s memory moves us to say a few words on the Blessed Virgin Mary, who was filled with the Holy Spirit and to especially refer to her motherly heart. Holy Scripture twice mentions Mary’s motherly heart:
1) After the events regarding Jesus’ birth, Saint Luke writes: “Mary kept all these things, pondering them in her heart” (Lk 2:19).
2) After the encounter in the temple, when Jesus was 12 years old, Saint Luke writes once again: “his mother kept all these things in her heart” (Lk 2:51). This is truly a simple, motherly and humane reaction! She kept all these events with gratitude inside her and reflected upon them with love in her motherly heart. In both, the first and second, occasions, not only words are mentioned which Mary heard, since the Greek original rhemata means words, news, teaching, events, memories. The Madonna pondered upon these events in her heart, just as one ponders upon the glorious mysteries of the rosary, keeps them as a great treasure, thanks God and prays to Him that she may thoughtfully unite them in her mind and heart. Mary surely spoke of these events to Jesus when he grew up. She also could have heard directly from him and experienced during his and her lifetime, the full meaning of these memories and events. The Gospels contain a few moments where Mary speaks up, asks questions and says a prayer. For instance, the Gospels of St. Matthew and St. Mark do not contain any of Mary’s direct words. In the Gospels of St. Luke and St. John, there are a few, five or six of her direct interventions.
1) In Nazareth she asked the archangel Gabriel: “How can this be, since I have no husband?” (Lk 1:34). And when the angel explained in his own way how this will come about, then she
2) accepted and said: “Let it be to me according to your word” (Lk 1:38). This word of the Madonna, we Catholics say at least once if not three times a day, when we pray the Angelus.
3) The Magnificat is her prayer of praise and thanksgiving, which follows the Old Testament way of the Samuel's mother Anne, arranged in ten lines: “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour… and his mercy is on those who fear him from generation to generation…” (Lk 1:46-56). This prayer of praise we priests, religious and sisters pray or sing each evening during the liturgy of the hours. Then come two words which Mary puts to Jesus:
4) When he was 12 years old, while at the temple, when they found him, she said: “Son, why have you treated us so? Behold, your father and I have been looking for you anxiously” (Lk 2:48), which we heard in today’s gospel reading.
5) and at the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry, at Cana of Galilee, during a wedding banquet: “They have no wine” (Jn 2:3). Right after this
6) she said to the servants: “Do whatever he tells you” (Jn 2:5). There could be other similar occasions in the future.
Regarding these few lines where Mary directly asks, speaks or prays something, and other moments when she listens to others and in which she is described as Virgin and Mother, tons of theological books have been written, innumerous Marian conferences have been held and many Masters’ and Doctoral theses on Mariology have been defended. These biblical words are the foundation of our faith and relationship to Mary as Mother of Jesus and exemplary believer in God. She is an example and guide in this faith. We especially appreciate Mary’s words that God’s mercy is on those who fear him, on those who have a sense of fear of God and his commandments. Dear candidates for Confirmation, remember to pray today and always for the gift of fear of God which comes from the Holy Spirit!
When one keeps this in mind, and arrives at a biblical knowledge of Mary as the humble and silent Virgin, as a worried and prudent Mother, who ponders upon all these events in her heart and speaks very little of it, then a true believer can only remain amazed at the talk that here in Medjugorje, for almost twenty years now, day by day, Mary has been presumably “appearing” for five, ten or fifteen minutes to so-called “seers”; that she is presumably handing something over: in the form of so-called “messages”, or “ten secrets”, it’s not sure if there are exactly ten, if each person has received the same number, or if there are six times more, meaning that each person received a different amount.
Does this mean that this “apparition” up until this time has appeared 6,940 times (19 years multiplied by 365/6 days)? And that constantly, every day, she is speaking, and that only once in a month she leaves a “message”, and thanks the so-called “seers” for responding to her call? And this has been going on for almost twenty years now, and could keep on going another ten, twenty or even more years?
The official statements of the Church, starting from the local Bishop up to the Bishops' Conference has not in this case recognized a single “apparition” as authentic. The Church has clearly declared that it is impossible to affirm that these events involve supernatural apparitions. For this reason I wrote decisively and clearly on 14 February 1998 to the local pastor: “Therefore, let no official church premises belonging to the parish be used for these so-called, presumed and imagined “apparitions” which have never been recognized nor accepted by the Catholic Church”. The parish priest willingly obeyed. Therefore I hereby declare with no doubt in my mind, as the local Ordinary and Bishop, that not a single so-called “apparition” nor so-called “message” convinces me that these events involve supernatural appearances. Messages on peace and grace, regarding fasting and prayer, on love and the need for penance are already known at the most official levels of the Bible teachings and those of the Church.
And what are we to do with the acclaimed “spiritual fruits”? Dear believers, in whichever church you enter in order to pray to God with faith, sincerely confess and repent for your sins, and piously receive Holy Communion, you may receive spiritual fruits. Candidates for Confirmation receive the sevenfold gift of the Holy Spirit, not because they are in Medjugorje, or Mostar or Rome, but because it is conferred upon them by an authorized minister of the Church. No one in the right mind who believes in God would every say that in those parishes around the world where the sacraments are celebrated and received legitimately, there will be no spiritual fruits. Wherever the Holy Spirit is found there will be spiritual fruits as well!
The Catholic Church in her mission of teaching and upholding the truth of salvation, is not influenced by large or small numbers of peoples or nations present. She holds instead, to that which God has revealed about himself, on mankind, and on Mary of whom we believe and hold - that she was immaculately conceived, - that she is the Mother of God; according to the Father’s plan in time, by conceiving through the Holy Spirit, she gave birth to our Saviour Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the Second Person of the Holy Trinity, - that she remained a Virgin always, - that she was taken up body and soul into the glory of heaven, The Church upholds and believes that the Blessed Virgin Mary can appear, and that she has appeared at different times in history and also that up to this day there is no proof nor convincing arguments that she ever appeared in a supernatural way in Medjugorje.
All of us, you candidates for Confirmation and the rest of us, should pray to the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of Jesus and our spiritual mother, that through the love of her Immaculate Heart she intercede for us before the Father, that through her motherly care, she watch over us, over this parish, our Diocese and the entire world.

Medjugorje after 21 Years (mdaviesonmedj.com) Latest statement on Medjugorje from Bishop Ratko Peric 2.17.04

The following is the English language text of the concluding segment of the letter sent by the Diocesan Bishop of Mostar, Msgr. Ratko Peric, to Fra Jozo Zovko OFM on 26 June 2004, Prot. N. 843/2004, containing the Bishop’s decision to prohibit Fr. Zovko from exercising all priestly functions in the Diocese. The full text of the letter was published earlier in the Vrhbosna, Official Newsletter of the Bishops’ Conference of Bosnia-Herzegovina in N. 3/2004, p.293-298.

…….
You go one step further by stating in your two letters that “it undoubtedly follows that by hearing the confessions of the faithful in the Diocese or throughout the world, I am not violating any law of the Church”, thereby denying everything that the previous Bishop Msgr. Žanić decreed, which I then reaffirmed and publicized on many occasions, as has been mentioned.
Besides this, you mistakenly conclude that I am not ready to offer you any pastoral duty on the territory of these dioceses and therefore you consider that it would be “ineffective” to have a “meeting and conversation”. What I sought from you was to fulfil some concrete conditions beforehand, which you did not do, as is mentioned above.
Hence, your interpretation of “Medjugorje” is not in accord with the decision and the request of the Congregation.
Furthermore, in accordance with the norms of the Code of Canon Law, particularly can. 1336 § 1 n. 2, and can. 1338 § 2, to defend this local Church from your abuse, whilst not entering into the religious discipline of your congregation, and having in mind your constant disobedience in this local Church and your lack of respect towards the decisions of the Diocesan Bishops, I hereby declare that within the territory of the Dioceses of Mostar-Duvno and Trebinje-Mrkan, you have no faculties to exercise any priestly functions, especially no faculty to hear confessions.
As the Diocesan Bishop, I invite you once again, as I have done many times in the past, to regularize your priestly standing if you wish to live and work in this local Church.
I shall gladly show you here in Mostar, all available documentation that is found in this Chancery Office regarding your illicit pastoral activities as well as your moral life, upon receiving your written request.
You are hereby notified that this decision shall be published in the next issue of Vrhbosna, the Official Newsletter of the dioceses of Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Recommending you in prayer to the Lord, I remain, respectfully yours,

Ratko Peric

Mediation may end dispute at Caritas (March 8, 2005)
Confidential settlement ends Caritas suits 4/7/2005 al.com
The Associated Press
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — A confidential settlement has been reached in a lawsuit against the Caritas religious group by former members who claimed they were brainwashed and drained of assets.
The settlement, mediated by Birmingham lawyer Arthur Hanes Jr., also settled similar suits involving Caritas in federal and state courts in California and Florida.Terry Colafrancesco of Shelby County, near Birmingham, founded Caritas as a resident organization after a 1988 visit from an Eastern European woman who reported visitations from the Virgin Mary in Colafrancesco's cow pasture.
The visions were similar to those she reported experiencing for two decades in her homeland (MEDJUGORJE).
Marija Pavlovic Lunetti has returned periodically over the last 17 years and reported more visions. Her last visit, in May, drew thousands of people from across the country, and donations flow to Caritas from around the world. Lunetti is scheduled to return to Caritas in August. In a lawsuit filed in 2001, several former Caritas residents and parents of residents accused Colafrancesco and Caritas of fraud, misrepresentation, undue influence, intentional infliction of emotional distress and false imprisonment.
They claimed that Colafrancesco enticed devout Catholics to Caritas and then drained their assets.Caritas' lawyer, Daniel Burnick, told The Birmingham News for a story Thursday that "all litigation between the parties has been resolved to the satisfaction of all parties involved. The terms and conditions of the resolution are to be kept confidential, as agreed on by all parties."Burnick confirmed that the settlement also included suits brought against Caritas by California anti-cultist Phillip Kronzer, who was bankrolling the Shelby County action, and countersuits against Kronzer brought by Caritas."I'm glad it's over," plaintiff Laura Flynn said from her Michigan home. She said the parties to the suit were forbidden to discuss the terms of the settlement.

... E. Michael Jones, the author of "The Medjugorje Deception: Queen of Peace, Ethnic Cleansing and Ruined Lives," calls it one of the greatest hoaxes of the 20th Century. The visions of Mary were orchestrated by Franciscan priests in the town parish, St. James, because the local diocese did not want to give them jurisdiction over certain parishes, Jones argues. Local bishops have declared the apparitions to be inauthentic. Then Medjugorje got caught up in geopolitics.1981 was a time of flux in Yugoslavia. Tito, the communist strongman who was able to hold together the country's ethnic groups for decades, had died a year earlier. The visions provided fuel for anti-communism as well as Croatian nationalism that flared up in the 1990s war.The tourism industry, Jones said, also has become a cash cow. "You had basically a whole series of intersecting circles here," said Jones, a Catholic who said he does believe the Virgin's 1917 appearances in Fatima, Portugal, were authentic. His Croatian heritage and love of Mary led Rev. Philip Pavich, a Franciscan priest and native Iowan, to request a transfer to St. James parish. For 13 years, he ministered to English-speaking pilgrims and heard confessions up to six hours a day.But a few years after arriving, he came to the conclusion that the visions were not the Virgin. For one, the seers were disobeying church commands - including the bishop's request that they not receive their apparitions in St. James. He also decided the messages they were relaying contained "classic New Age jargon" inconsistent with Catholic doctrine."If anyone wanted to believe it, I did," said Pavich. "I changed my life upside down to go there. So it ended up a big disappointment to me."The faithful may have powerful religious experiences in Medjugorje, he said, but "they lose all sense of critical judgment because they're anesthetized by some nice feeling. I think they're bound by a guilt ... that they cannot declare this to be inauthentic because they feel like they're denying the grace that they received."And those spinning suns? "That's a light show on your retina," he said.Dragicevic answers doubters simply: He says he'll pray for them. Most people he meets do believe, he said."Before I came, I was hemming and hawing, hemming and hawing, Should I go? Should I go?" Marianne Faraone, 33, said. "And after going, I feel a complete peace. I don't even know how to describe it. She was actually there with us in the room.""Her message is very simple and I don't know if people came here expecting to see fireworks," said Vickie Mazur, 60. "But that's not what it is. It's the peace and the love that came through."The Virgin Mary's remedy for a "spiritually dying" world, Dragicevic explains, is indeed simple."Every mother has to repeat herself and every mother teaches," he said. "A mother has to repeat herself so the children will not forget.""`Don't talk about peace, but begin to live peace,'" he quoted her as saying. "`Don't talk about prayer but begin to live prayer.' Many times she has repeated the words: pray, pray, pray."

By The Universe: A Bosnian bishop has urged six Marian visionaries at Medjugorje to stop their claims that they havee seen apparitions of the Virgin Mary.
Bishop Ratko Peric of Mostar-Duvno, said the church "has not accepted, either as supernatural or as Marian, any of the apparitions" said to have been witnessed by a group of people from Medjugorje.”"As the local bishop, I maintain that regarding the events of Medjugorje, on the basis of the investigations and experience gained thus far throughout these last 25 years, the church has not confirmed a single apparition as authentically being the Madonna," he said. He then called on the alleged visionaries and "those persons behind the messages to demonstrate ecclesiastical obedience and to cease with these public manifestations and messages in this parish."
The bishop made his comments at a Mass at Medjugorje’s St James’ church, adding that But Bishop Peric said in his homily that the "so-called apparitions do not strengthen the faith, but rather further convince us that in all of this there is nothing either authentic or established as truthful."
Bishop Peric said his views, and those of his predecessor, Bishop Pavao Zanic, who was also opposed to the claims, were supported by the pope. He expressed appreciation to Popes Benedict and John Paul II, "who have always respected the judgments of the bishops of Mostar-Duvno, of the previous as well as the current bishop, regarding the so-called apparitions and messages of Medjugorje, all the while recognizing the Holy Father's right to give a final decision on these events."

X ASAMBLEA GENERAL ORDINARIA DEL SÍNODO DE LOS OBISPOS 30 de settiembre-27 de octubre 2001

S. Em. R. Card.

4) Lorsque les parents de Jésus retrouvèrent Jésus dans le temple, Marie dit alors: "Mon enfant, pourquoi nous as-tu fait cela? Vois! Ton père et moi, nous te cherchons angoissés" (Lc 2,48), qui est la lecture de l'Evangile d'aujourd'hui;
